Facebook

Facebook is amazing. You bump into people from the school days who you never thought you would meet again for the rest of your life. But it's sad when you meet people and you find that life hasn't been kind to them. Bad careers, bad marriages, bad diet... etc.

Kareem Soliman

Almost a year ago, to be precise on the 7th of November 2006, the young Egyptian blogger Kareem Soliman was imprisoned. For almost a year now he has been suffering from a gross miscarriage of justice. He is an innocent man jailed for expressing his views on a blog.

The Farouk Thing

There was a TV soap opera aired recently about King Farouk that was less critical of the dude than any portrayal of him ever seen on Arab TV. Then a Farouk fan club emerged with people who know nothing about him going on and on about how wonderful Egypt was when he was king. I have a theory about the members of the Farouk fan club. They probably come from lower class families who had no status whatsoever during the king days. They watch a lot of old Arabic movies and see all the pashas and the beys with their big houses and glitzy stylish surroundings and they want to pretend that they belong to this class. True Egyptian aristocracy (i.e. anybody who was anybody during the Fouad and Farouk days and before) don't care about Farouk. Such people are proud of their own families and backgrounds and don't revere Farouk. To all the pretentious royalists (ha...) I can only say that Egypt wasn't that great under Farouk. There was a lot of injustices that probably your own grand parents and great grand parents suffered from. For fucks sake, the dude wasn't even Egyptian.

How crazy can it get in Iraq?

So Turkey wants to invade Iraq with Syria's blessing.

The Iraqis are worried about their national sovereignty. Why? They are already invaded.

Bush thinks that a Turkish invasion will bring chaos. Nobody wants chaos, but Sanchez says that Iraq is a nightmare with no end in sight.

So it's OK to have a nightmare with no end in sight, but we don't want chaos...

I give up.

The sex party and the muslim brotherhood

The Sex Party is a small Canadian political party that promotes sexual freedom.

The party complained in the Canadian Federal Court that Canada's post services unjustly refused to distribute their political flyers during the 2006 federal election.

"Canada Post" described the material as pornographic and refused to distribute it. The four-page pamphlet showed a controversial painting depicting a sexual act on its front page and the tag, "Politics for a Sex-Positive Future."

Meanwhile in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood issues a political blueprint for a theocratic fascist Iranian style state, that would discriminate against Egyptian women and copts.

If you ask me, the MB blueprint is much more obscene than the Sex Party flyer.

I don't get it

"S" is a forty something year old professional from an upper middle class background. The other day she was in tears because her boss at work was rude to her. She fucked up something and he told her (بلاش تخلف).

She was visibly very upset while she was telling me about it and she said, "How dare he talk to me like he was talking to his driver?"

I really don't get it. So is it okay to be rude to the driver, but an insult if it's directed at her? Poor driver.

Do you think like that?

How many people do you know who think like that? I know a few!

- Parents should feel proud if their child is a bully at school.
- When a man is feared by his wife and children because he can be abusive (physically or verbally), then this man is seen as a man of strong character.
- Big men get more respect than small men.
- Only a weak man allows his wife not to submit totally to him.
- A person's power is proportional with the number of people this person directly controls and being brutal with the people you control is sometimes needed. After all others will not respect you unless they fear you.
- Weak people are fair game.
- Poor people are weak people.
- Being a woman and being poor are not that different.
- People who make a fuss about animal abuse are pussies.

Bastard

This conversation really happened. I am not making this up.

Man 1: Does anybody have a bottle of perfume?
Man 2: Why?
Man 1: Someone fainted. We'll make him smell some perfume to wake him up.
Man 2: Why does it have to be perfume? Let him smell an onion.
